Slocum and Cahoon A8. One of approximately 746 copies. Joyce had been trying to get 'Dubliners' into print for many years. Back in 1906 he wrote to the publisher Grant Richards: "It is not my fault that the odour of ashpits and old weeds and offal hangs round my stories. I seriously believe that you will retard the course of civilisation in Ireland by preventing the Irish people from having one good look at themselves in my nicely polished looking-glass".

See Slocum and Cahoon A8, "Joyce's troubles did not end with the publication of 'Dubliners' on June 15, 1914, Grant Richards was extremely remiss in paying him royalties and could not be persuaded to publish a second edition ... finally, in order to hold Joyce, Richards reluctantly agreed to issue a second edition of 'Dubliners' in 1918. This he did by importing sheets of the 1917 American edition from B.W. Huebsch and binding up just enough sets to satisfy Joyce. It is not known how many copies of this second Grant Richards edition of 'Dubliners' exist, but it is scarce and only two copies have been reported in the last twelve years. One of these, the Edward W. Titus copy, is now in the Slocum library".

The first English edition was made up from the sheets of the American edition because English printers would not accept the responsibility of printing it. In all, seven printers refused the work "on moral grounds". No more than 750 sets of sheets were imported.

At last some 80 or 100 copies come but I am still in a turmoil helping Miss Beach to get them off and packing parcels in a way they were never packed before. The British Museum ordered a copy and so did the Times so that I advise you to go to confession for the last day cannot be far off".

Slocum and Cahoon A22. Limited edition 947/1500. One of only 250 copies to be signed by both Matisse and Joyce. The six etchings with their accompanying sketches on yellow and blue paper depict the Calypso, Aeolus, Cyclops, Nausicaa, Circe and Ithaca episodes of 'Ulysses'. Despite his evident unfamiliarity with Joyce's novel, Matisse claimed that the etched plates were among the best work he had ever done in the graphic arts. Joyce was apparently unimpressed and preferred the designs of his troubled daughter Lucia: "If they had been signed L.J. instead of H.M. people would have had a different tale to tell. I am only too painfully aware that Lucia has no future but that does not prevent me from seeing the difference between what is beautiful and shapely and what is ugly and shapeless. As usual I am in a minority of one" (Letter to Harriet Shaw Weaver, 1 May 1935).
